God of War Devs Explain Why They Ditched Trilogy In Favor of A Single Sequel

God of War PS4 was essentially a reboot of the series with a fresh slate, and God of War Ragnarok is apparently the end of this new story arc so it won’t be a trilogy.

In a new behind-the-scenes video regarding the development of God of War Ragnarok, it was explained that the decision to drop the idea of a trilogy was made after careful consideration by the development team. Rich Gauber, who is the lead writer of the game, has explained this decision.

“Whether the Norse saga was going to be a trilogy or just two games was something we debated a lot, ” says Rich. There were obviously pros and cons for either approach. So we waited for Cory Barlog to weigh in, and he did. And he said, ‘Let’s do it in two.'”

Senior producer Ariel Angelott mentions the decision of doing the game in two parts instead of a trilogy. “The consequence to that is how do you wrap up this story in one game and do Ragnarok justice? How do we lead up to that and then have a big moment at the end of the game and wrap up all those loose threads?”

“This game is bigger than what we initially envisioned. There’s a lot of important story moments that we needed to cover. There are more characters that we follow the threads of. And, ultimately, it ends up feeling big and epic because there is a lot there for people to enjoy.”

God of War Ragnarok will be available for PS4 and PS5 when it launches on November 9, 2022.
