Neversoft became a part of Activision in 1999. The studio was known for its work on the Guitar Hero and Tony Hawk franchises. In 2011, Neversoft began the development of the canceled Call of Duty game, titled Future Warfare. Subsequently, Neversoft collaborated with Infinity Ward on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, contributing to the Special Ops Chaos mode released in August 2011. The studio also created the Extinction mode for Call of Duty: Ghosts. Activision merged Neversoft with Infinity Ward in May 2014.
The aforementioned Call of Duty: Future Warfare was worked on by Neversoft between 2011-2012, with an anticipated release window around 2013. The development team began working on the project following the departure of Vince Zampella and Jason West, using the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 engine as the game’s foundation. The campaign was set 30 to 50 years into the future, featuring missions like “Moonbase Assault” on the Moon with low gravity gameplay. Seven other missions were named, but their contents remained unknown. These were called “Border,” “Visiting Hours,” “Into The Fire,” “Winter Anvil,” “Descent,” “Hit Hard At Home,” and “Operation Deadbolt.”
The Multiplayer mode included an Escort mode and the initial version of Clan Wars, referred to as “The Emergent War” at the time. Although low-gravity combat and dynamic character suit changes based on Perks were initially considered, they were eventually cut from the game. The Escort mode featured a UGV fitted with a Trophy System that players needed to escort through checkpoints. Several test maps were developed, but only about four were completed around the time of the project’s cancellation.
