The director of the Fallout series has hinted at two brand new spinoff projects that appear to be in development.
Speaking as a guest during the Kinda Funny Gamescast, Fallout 3 and 4 director Todd Howard was asked whether he had wished Bethesda Game Studios could’ve had a Fallout 5 or a spinoff ready for release alongside the TV show. In response, he said that this wasn’t necessarily a consideration at the time, as the studio views Fallout as a top-down franchise in terms of how healthy and how relevant it is to the world.
Todd mentioned that Bethesda Softworks has a whole team working on Fallout 76, and, as such, the studio has always been doing a lot of work on the franchise. He pointed out that the development team added new content to Fallout 76 for the show and that the game has a major map expansion coming this summer with Skyland Valley. Regarding the possibility of a Fallout 5, he said that the development team is always making plans and it kind of has in some ways.
In response to another question regarding the possibility of co- development or external development on a Fallout spinoff like Fallout: New Vegas, Todd said that the team at Bethesda has always had those conversations. He wasn’t able to go into detail about it just yet, but he mentioned that the runway for the Fallout franchise includes working on “this thing” and “this other thing”, hinting that there are two spinoffs currently in development.
Previously, during a recent episode of The Xbox Two podcast, co-host Jez Corden claimed that Xbox wants to see a new Fallout game released sooner rather than having to wait for Bethesda Softworks to finish work on The Elder Scrolls VI. He said that he expected the next title to be released within the current decade.
