Dragon Quest series creator Yuji Horii took to Twitter/X to share that he has been working hard play testing the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake at Square Enix until almost 10pm. He said that it is thanks to the fans that he is able to work with such dedication.
Horii’s tweet suggests that the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake isn’t far from release, as it is currently in the play testing phase of development. It’s likely that new information regarding the game will be revealed in the weeks to come.
For the uninitiated, the original Dragon Quest 3, also known as Dragon Warrior 3 in North America, is a 1988 role-playing video game developed by Chunsoft and published by Enix. It was initially released for the Famicom in Japan and later for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in North America. The game underwent an enhanced remake for the Super Famicom in 1996 and the Game Boy Color in 2001. Subsequent versions included releases for mobile phones and the Wii in 2009 and 2011. An Android and iOS version launched in Japan on September 25, 2014, with a worldwide release as Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation on December 4, 2014, marking the first official English subtitle for the game.
Dragon Quest 3 is part of a unified story with the first three Dragon Quest games. Serving as the initial chronological installment, it features the hero Erdrick (Loto in Japanese releases and Game Boy Color localization). The narrative focuses on “the Hero,” assigned the task of saving the world from the archfiend Baramos. Assembling a party of companions, the Hero embarks on a journey across towns and locations, ultimately reaching the lair of the Demon Lord Baramos. Much like in the other games in the series, battles are turn-based, though the subsequent remakes incorporate various interface changes from later entries.
