DOOM: The Dark Ages is rumored to be ready for an announcement on the Nintendo Switch 2. Still, the reveal is purposely being delayed due to Nintendo’s strict secrecy measures. Reports suggest that any games exclusive to the upcoming console need special permission from Nintendo before they can be announced. This strategy helps prevent leaks and manages excitement until Nintendo officially reveals more details about the Switch 2.
The game, currently being developed by id Software and published by Bethesda Softworks, is the eighth main installment in the DOOM series and acts as a prequel to DOOM. Following the success of DOOM Eternal, DOOM: The Dark Ages takes players to a darker, medieval-inspired setting with a unique twist on the usual first-person shooter gameplay.
Development for DOOM: The Dark Ages started shortly after the completion of DOOM Eternal’s post-launch campaign, The Ancient Gods, in 2021. The game entered full production by August 2022 and was officially announced in June 2024. Its release is scheduled for May 15, 2025, on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
Though not yet confirmed, adding a Switch 2 version matches Nintendo’s recent efforts to enhance its hardware capabilities. This move could provide a high-quality portable gaming experience similar to current-generation consoles.
Nintendo has confirmed a Direct presentation focusing on the Nintendo Switch 2 hardware and software, scheduled for April 2, 2025. If an announcement regarding DOOM: The Dark Ages coming to the Switch 2 is planned, it is likely to be revealed during this upcoming Nintendo Direct. However, please note that this is currently just a rumor.
The original DOOM and its successor, DOOM Eternal, were both released on the Nintendo Switch. Despite the hardware’s lower specifications, these games ran adequately, albeit with some compromises in image quality and frame rate. Therefore, it is not surprising that DOOM: The Dark Ages may also be coming to the Nintendo Switch 2.
