Hasbro, owner of Wizards of the Coast and D&D, is currently in talks with partners to work on a Baldur’s Gate 3 sequel.
Speaking during an interview, Eugene Evans, senior vice president of Digital Strategy and Licensing for Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast, stated that the company is now talking to lots of partners and being approached by a lot of partners to discuss how to take the Baldur’s Gate series forward.
Evans mentioned that Hasbro hopes that a sequel doesn’t take another 25 years, as it was from Baldur’s Gate 2 to 3. He explained that the company will take its time and find the right partner, the right approach, and the right product that could represent the future of Baldur’s Gate. According to him, Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast take the future of the series “very, very seriously”, just as it does with all of its decisions around its portfolio. He added that the company doesn’t rush into decisions as to who to partner with on products or what products it should be considering.
Regarding a possible return of characters from Baldur’s Gate 3, Evans stated that Larian created a much loved cast, and that they are now essentially part of D&D canon. However, he added that it’s too early to talk specifics and that there’s a much bigger question about how the company will approach Baldur’s Gate in the future. That said, he does believe all of those characters, for the sake of the fans, could potentially appear in future products.
According to Evans, Baldur’s Gate 3 has confirmed the voracious appetite fans have for content based on D&D, particularly from the gaming community. He considered this a good thing, as Hasbro has been investing in new D&D games. He mentioned that the aforementioned games will appear over the next five years, and that they will cover all genres, and all platforms. He believes that there’s room within the D&D universe for many expressions of what the franchise is all about, as long it remain true to the things that people love about the IP and keep things authentic. He added that Hasbro is committed to doing just that.
