Baldur’s Gate 3’s Karlach Actor Warns AI Will “Destroy” Companies That Prioritize Cost-Cutting

The debate surrounding artificial intelligence in the gaming industry continues to intensify, with Baldur’s Gate 3 voice actor Samantha Béart strongly opposing its use for cost-cutting. In a recent interview with Edge, Béart criticized gaming executives who push AI adoption solely to reduce expenses, warning that this short-sighted strategy could ultimately lead to reputational damage and the collapse of their companies.

Béart, who played Karlach in Larian Studios’ critically acclaimed RPG, emphasized that AI replacing voice actors is not an option creatives will accept. She noted that such a move would effectively eliminate careers in voice acting, making it clear that industry professionals are unlikely to support AI-driven roles. According to Béart, the corporate mindset focused on maximizing profit clashes with the artistic values of actors and developers, leading to tensions that are difficult to reconcile.

Beyond the immediate impact on voice actors, Béart also raised concerns about the gaming industry’s lack of transparency. She pointed out that, unlike the film industry, video game actors often sign non-disclosure agreements without being given key project details, making it harder to deliver authentic performances. This secrecy, she argues, only worsens the disconnect between creatives and executives.

Béart further compared the gaming industry’s growing reliance on AI and cost-cutting measures to broader trends in the tech sector. She highlighted how companies in tech are often bought and sold at inflated prices, leading to long-term instability. Drawing parallels to former General Electric CEO Jack Welch—whose aggressive cost-cutting strategies ultimately harmed the company—Béart warned that gaming studios following a similar path risk facing the same fate.

As AI technology continues to reshape the gaming industry, Béart’s concerns highlight a crucial debate over the balance between financial efficiency and artistic integrity. With actors and creatives pushing back against AI-driven roles, the industry may soon face a defining moment that will determine the future of talent-driven storytelling in games.
