Physical copies of Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment’s latest action adventure game, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, require a patch in order to run.
Reddit user Interesting-Squash81 has reported that their early retail PS5 copy of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora did not run. Instead, they were greeted with the game’s logo and the game’s release date indicating that they will not be able to play before then.
As seen in the screenshot of the Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora’s box, it states that an internet connection is required to install the game. In addition, a Ubisoft account is also required in order to play the game. As such, those who got their hands on early copies or those who do not have immediate access to the internet will not be able to play their physical copies of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.
This will undoubtedly come as a huge disappointment to preservationists and those who want to be able to run software they own without the need for downloading any necessary files or components.
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is an action-adventure game set in an open world and based on the Avatar film series. The game was released on December 7, 2023, for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S. It marks the second video game installment in the franchise, following Avatar: The Game (2009).
The game is played from the first-person perspective. Players assume the role of a Na’vi orphan who underwent training as a soldier by the Resources Development Administration (RDA). After a period of suspended animation, the character awakens fifteen years later in an abandoned facility. The objective is to explore the Western Frontier, a previously unseen region of Pandora, unraveling the protagonist’s backstory and rallying local Na’vi tribes against the RDA’s exploitation of the region’s natural resources. The game’s narrative is loosely connected to the films but remains self-contained.
