In Returnal, you will pass through a variety of biomes that dramatically alter the world’s appearance and feel, as you lead Selene through the hostile alien planet of Atropos. The game changes these environments every time you die, so no two runs are ever the same. In this guide, we will tell you how many biomes are there, and everything else you need to know to keep track of your progress in Returnal.
How Many Biomes in Returnal
Returnal has a total of six biomes that you must advance through in order to reach the game’s credits. These biomes are basically different areas on Atropos that change up the environments in which you will be fighting enemies. There is a separate boss in each one of them and you will have to defeat it in order to progress.
Below is the list of all the biomes in Returnal:
- Overgrown Ruins
- Crimson Wastes
- Derelict Citadel
- Echoing Ruins
- Fractured Wastes
- Abyssal Scar
If you want to proceed directly to the next biome without having to battle the boss again in subsequent runs, you will have to get a key by defeating a biome’s boss. However, you will get powerful gear as rewards for beating bosses, so if you feel like you got a good roll on your run, it’s well worth it to take them on.
You will not be finished with Returnal even after you have gotten to the credits and seen all biomes. To get the secret, true ending, you will still need to find all of the Sunface Fragments scattered throughout the planet.
