The renowned Japanese game developer FromSoftware is reportedly working on a new project under the codename “CL.” This rumor surfaced via insider Kurakasis, who shared insights suggesting that “CL” is distinct from anything currently connected to Elden Ring and its upcoming downloadable content, Shadow of the Erdtree. Kurakasis initially hinted at the existence of the “CL” project before Shadow of the Erdtree was publicly announced, implying that it may represent a brand-new concept or intellectual property for FromSoftware.
Known for using internal codenames, FromSoftware previously referred to Elden Ring as “GR” (Great Rune), which aligns with the developer’s pattern of using such abbreviations. Given this history, the “CL” codename suggests a project potentially unrelated to Elden Ring’s universe. The suggestion that “CL” might be only a partial abbreviation has intrigued dataminers and fans, who have begun scouring game files in hopes of uncovering additional hints.
Despite this intrigue, the theme and content of “CL” remain entirely speculative, with no official confirmation or commentary from FromSoftware. This leaves the community guessing whether “CL” could represent an expansion of the Souls-like genre, a completely new intellectual property, or perhaps a revival of an older title.
FromSoftware has not announced its next project. In recent years, they have developed games such as Armored Core VI, Elden Ring, and its expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree. Considering their tendency to focus on new intellectual properties (IPs), it is quite likely that their upcoming game will be another new IP.
