Bethesda Game Studios’ Studio Design Director has shared why the release of Fallout 5 will happen many years later.

On Twitter/X, Emil Pagliarulo was asked about the long wait until the release of Fallout 5 and the part of the development process that takes up a majority of the time for Bethesda Game Studios. The Studio Design Director responded by stating that it’s a complicated question.

Fallout 5 release

Pagliarulo said that this not specific to any of Bethesda Game Studios’ titles, and that development times can vary for a variety of reasons. On Starfield, he mentioned that the development team spent a lot of time updating and developing its tech. The studio also paused for “a bit” to assist with the development of Fallout 76.

The Studio Design Director further mentioned that, at the end of the day, it always comes down to that most important resource of all – people. He added that, as with any development team, Bethesda Game Studios have talented developers who need time to make quality games. As a result, he said that the development team can’t do everything at once.

Previously, Pagliarulo had criticized player discourse surrounding Starfield, and how disconnected some are from the realities of game development. The Studio Design Director took to Twitter/X to highlight how some players speak with complete authority in their complaints, despite being disconnected from the realities of game development.

Pagliarulo mentioned that he acknowledges the consumer perspective, and agreed that when one spends money on things, that gives them the right to complain about those things. He stated that he doesn’t complain about games over social media, as he knows that it’s hard to make games and because he has too much respect for his fellow developers. According to him, most people don’t have these constraints, and are free to post whatever they want. According to him, the internet is a “glorious wild wild west”.
